On August 10,1992, the TOPEX/Poseidon satellite was launched from the Guiana Space
Center in Kourou, French Guiana. The spacecraft’s mission was to provide a 3 to 5 year
look at the changing topography of the world’s oceans. The information generated by
the mission is used by scientists to help us better understand the ocean’s role in the global
climate.
The goal of this CD-ROM is to provide a comprehensive look at the TOPEX/Poseidon
mission and spacecraft. The CD contains over an hour of digital video, audio, images, and
text captions which describe everything from the impetus for the mission to the results
we’ve obtained thus far.
The CD is divided into the following seven sections:
Section 1: Mission History and Background
Section 2: Mission Description
Section 3: Spacecraft
Section 4: How the Measurement System Works
Section 5: Mission Operations
Section 6: What WeÕve Learned
Section 7: Science Data
